Daniels, Ph.D. Jaret is the Assistant Director for Research of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity and IFAS Assistant Professor of Entomology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He started the FBMN in 2003 and is the overall Program Director. Jaret has over 16 years experience with conservation and education projects focused on imperiled butterflies in the U.S. and Caribbean. He is currently the lead biologist from the University of Florida working on the ecology, conservation and recovery of the state-endangered Miami Blue butterfly (Cyclargus thomasi bethunebakeri). An avid gardener and professional wildlife photographer, Jaret has authored more than 50 publications dealing with butterflies, conservation, integrated pest management, and butterfly gardening including the most recent titles Florida Butterfly Gardening: A Guide for the Deep South (2000), Butterflies of Florida Field Guide (2003), Butterflies of the Carolinas Field Guide (2004), Butterflies of Georgia Field Guide (2004), Butterflies of Ohio Field Guide (2004), and Butterflies of Michigan Field Guide (2005). J. Akers Pence, Ph.D. Akers is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He joined the FBMN in 2004 as the State Program Coordinator and is responsible for the majority of participant classroom and field training. Akers is a veteran butterfly watcher and brings years of experience to the program. He also has extensive field and conservation research experience, having worked on numerous imperiled Florida butterflies including the endangered Schaus’s Swallowtail and the Miami Blue. His dissertation research was on the conservation biology of the uncommon and very local Sweadner’s Hairstreak in north central Florida. |
